India is considering a Four-Day Week but with Longer shift Timings

The union ministry of Labour and employment is working to bring new labour codes which will make way for a three day weekend. Employees are made to work more than five days a week in today’s corporate set-up.

The Indian government may soon allow employees of companies to work for a 4-day week with a 12-hour shift per day. which will account for the same 48-hours per week.

“Companies need to give other three days of paid leaves to employees and this will be implemented with the consent of employees”

In India, employees work way beyond 48 hours per week – crossing the International labor organization(ILO) norms of working. “The maximum is 48 hours per week, with a maximum of eight hours a day,” Says ILO.

The four day week was already tried by a company in New Zealand and his employees were shocked. They tried the same for 6 weeks they would work 4 days with 32 work hours instead of 40 – but continue to get their full salary.

They have planned everything and before with new ways to work and bring better balance their lives. This was a huge success as employees felt less stressed in their work and also had a significant increase in their work-life balance.

Everything was good from staff turning up on time to taking fewer breaks and not leaving early. “Their actual job performance didn’t change while experimenting doing the same work over four days instead of five,” he added.

“They together worked out where they were wasting time and worked smarter, not harder”.This company was headed by Andrew Barnes who is also an entrepreneur and philanthropist. Who founded the company called Perpetual Guardian.

Yes,four day week is a good concept and it will be a sucess if companies try to execute it with pre planning.

But, not reducing the work hours in India. Doesn’t make any difference to employees and also I think the employee’s productivity rates will be decreased if they work for 12 hours a day.

Employees should be given enough freedom and adequate work stress for them to be perform good with higher productivity levels.

Let’s wait and watch how our Indian companies are going to try this or not.
